Dress like Cher Horowitz: Google Photos is becoming the digital closet you've been waiting for
For thirty years, since the release of the iconic film "Clueless," we have dreamed of Cher’s computerized closet – the one that suggests combinations, organizes the mess, and shows us how clothes look on us without needing to change a single shirt. Now, Google has announced it is turning this cinematic fantasy into reality within the Google Photos app, with a powerful new feature called Wardrobe.
Instead of rummaging through piles of physical clothes or trying to remember where you buried that dress from last summer, Google is harnessing its AI to turn your gallery into a personal style management tool. This is another step in the evolution of Google Photos from a "passive" storage app into an active personal assistant that understands our visual data.
How does it work? AI enters the closet
The magic of Wardrobe begins with an automatic scan of your entire photo history. The system uses advanced Computer Vision models to identify clothing items, shoes, and accessories that appear in photos you have taken over the years.
Unlike existing closet management apps (like Indyx or Whering), which require you to photograph each item separately against a white background in a tedious process, Google does the dirty work for you. It extracts the clothes from your selfies, vacation photos, and events, and automatically categorizes them under a "Collections" tab. There, you can find your wardrobe divided into clear categories: shirts, pants, dresses, and even jewelry.
The real magic: Virtual Try-On
Google doesn't stop at just cataloging. It integrates Virtual Try-On technology based on generative AI (Generative AI) models originally developed for the online shopping world.
By clicking the "Try it on" button, you can select various items from your digital closet and see a photorealistic simulation of how that combination looks on your body. The system knows how to simulate how the fabric stretches, folds, and drapes on your figure, which allows you to "mix and match" between a shirt you wore in 2022 and pants you bought last week – all without getting off the couch.
In addition, the system allows:
- •Creating moodboards: Building entire sets for specific events like weddings, business trips, or trips abroad.
- •Sharing styling: You can share the combinations you've created with friends to get feedback before you leave the house.
- •Rediscovery: The system will surface items you forgot existed, which can save you quite a bit of money on unnecessary purchases.
Conscious consumption and sustainability with AI
Beyond convenience, there is a significant breakthrough here in terms of sustainability. This revolution helps us better utilize what we already have in our closets. When we have easy access and smart management of our wardrobe, the need to purchase similar items just because "we forgot we had them" decreases significantly. Google is essentially building a database of your personal style for you, which will allow it in the future to offer incredibly accurate purchasing suggestions based on what you are actually missing, combined with the clothes you already own.
When can you start using it?
The update is expected to roll out to users during the summer of 2026. As part of Google's strategy, the feature will be launched first on Android devices, and shortly after, it will also reach the Google Photos app on iOS devices.
In summary: Google Photos is becoming a productivity tool that understands the visual text of our lives. If you have always wanted a personal stylist who knows exactly what you wore two years ago and how it will match the shoes you bought yesterday – it is now just a touch away inside your gallery.
