A Significant Upgrade for Developers: OpenAI Provides API Credits to ChatGPT Pro and Business Subscribers

If you use ChatGPT Pro or manage a Business workspace, you should check your billing settings. OpenAI recently announced a new, significant benefit: providing monthly credits for use with the company's API as part of your existing subscription. This is a move aimed at encouraging users to transition from using the interface-based bot to building applications, agents, and custom automation solutions.

How many credits will you receive?

The benefit is not uniform for everyone, but is derived directly from your subscription type:

  • •Pro Subscribers: The monthly credit amount matches your subscription plan – $100, $200, or $500 per month.
  • •Business Subscribers: Here the calculation is performed based on the number of paid seats. Each Standard seat provides $20, and each Premium seat provides $100, with the total monthly credits per workspace capped at $500.

What is important to know before you start?

Before you rush to redeem the benefit, there are several technical points important to know so you won't be disappointed:

  1. •Eligibility criteria: The benefit is available only to paid subscribers who have been active for at least seven days. Free trial users or Enterprise and Edu subscription types are not eligible for this benefit at this stage.
  2. •Manual activation: The credits are not activated automatically. You must enter the Billing settings in ChatGPT and link your API account (Organization) to activate the benefit.
  3. •Credit expiration: This is a "use it or lose it" model. The credits are valid for the monthly billing cycle only and do not roll over to the next month. If you do not use them, they will expire at the end of the month.
  4. •Separation of services: It is important to understand that these credits are intended exclusively for API usage. They do not increase your usage limits within the regular ChatGPT interface or other company products.

Why does this matter?

For developers and technology professionals, this is a game-changer. Until now, moving from using ChatGPT to using the API required a separate budget and more complex financial management. Now, OpenAI is making the API much more accessible to those who are already paying for their services. This is an excellent incentive to start building AI agents that can perform complex tasks, interface with external systems, and streamline work processes – all on the house.

If you are building small projects or testing the feasibility (PoC) of new products, these credits can cover a significant portion of your costs. It is recommended to visit the OpenAI Help Center to ensure you meet the conditions and start utilizing the new resources available to you.
