Microsoft's Quiet Revolution: High-Quality Transcription at 10 Cents an Hour

The new MAI-Transcribe-2 model is not only cheaper than anything we knew, it is also 10x faster and leaves the big competitors in the dust.

Transcribing audio to text is one of the most useful tools in the toolbox of every developer, product manager, or automation expert. Whether it is summarizing meetings, analyzing customer service calls, or making video content accessible, the need for accurate, fast, and cheap technology is critical. Until now, the market was dominated by models like OpenAI's Whisper or expensive dedicated services, but Microsoft's latest announcement of MAI-Transcribe-2 changes the rules of the game completely.

Microsoft did not just improve performance; it launched a frontal price war against Google and OpenAI, offering a powerful model at a fraction of the going market cost.

Performance That Leaves Competitors in the Dust

The most impressive figure for MAI-Transcribe-2 is its speed. According to Microsoft AI's official publications, the model can process a full hour of audio in just 10 seconds. This is a 10x improvement over earlier models like GPT-Transcribe, which makes it an ideal solution for systems that need real-time processing or huge amounts of data.

In terms of accuracy, the model shows impressive results on the WER (Word Error Rate) metric. In tests on the FLEURS benchmark across 60 languages, the model achieved an average error rate of 5.2%, and in the leading languages it drops even to 3.4%. This places it above Whisper-Large-V3 and Gemini 3.5 Transcribe on most accuracy and speed parameters.

Not Just Text: Built-In Advanced Features

One of the big challenges in transcription is not only understanding what was said, but who said it and in what context. MAI-Transcribe-2 comes with a built-in feature set that saves developers a lot of work:

  • •Speaker separation (Diarization): The model automatically detects when the speaker changes and marks it in the text.
  • •Language switching detection (Language Switching): In many conversations, especially in Israel, we tend to mix Hebrew and English. The model knows how to detect the switch between languages during a conversation and transcribe accordingly.
  • •Timestamps (Timestamps): Adds a timestamp to every word, which allows perfect syncing to video or quick searching inside audio files.
  • •Contextual biasing (Contextual Biasing): The option to feed the model professional terms or specific names to improve accuracy in fields like medicine, law, or technology.

The Price War: 10 Cents an Hour

The real news here is the price. Microsoft offers the model at only 10 cents per hour of audio (as part of a time-limited launch offer). For comparison, the previous version (MAI-Transcribe-1.5) cost about 36 cents per hour. As reported by VentureBeat, this price puts huge pressure on specialized companies like Deepgram and AssemblyAI, which until now were considered leaders in cost efficiency.

For businesses that run thousands of hours of transcription a month, moving to MAI-Transcribe-2 can save thousands of dollars without compromising on quality.

How to Start Working With It

The model is already available on two main platforms:

  1. •MAI Playground: A convenient testing environment that lets you upload files or record audio directly from the browser and see the results in real time.
  2. •Microsoft Foundry (formerly Azure AI Studio): The full platform for developers, which lets you embed the model inside apps through an API, manage permissions, and optimize performance.

Bottom Line

Microsoft is proving that it no longer relies only on the partnership with OpenAI. Developing in-house models like the MAI series lets it offer better performance at prices that no other provider can currently match.

If you are building a product based on voice, or if you are looking for a way to streamline transcription processes in your organization, MAI-Transcribe-2 is probably the most cost-effective solution on the market today. The combination of near-zero price, crazy speed, and support for 60 languages makes it the new standard in the field.
