Google Jules AI Agent Shutdown: What Developers Need to Know

October 30, 2026513

The End of the Jules Era: Google Joins Forces and Sunsets Its Coding Agent

If you have used Jules, Google's autonomous coding agent, you have likely already encountered the notice about its upcoming shutdown. Google has officially announced that it is discontinuing Jules as part of a strategic move to consolidate its development efforts in the field of intelligent agents. For many developers, this is a significant change in their daily workflow, but also an opportunity to understand the direction in which the wind is blowing in the world of AI.

Timelines: What do you need to know?

The transition will not happen overnight, but you should prepare accordingly so you do not lose valuable data:

  • •November 11, 2026: This is the critical deadline for completing active tasks. After this date, the service will move to "read-only" mode.
  • •December 31, 2026: The service will be officially shut down.

What happens to your code and data?

It is important to be reassured: your code, branches, and Pull Requests are on GitHub, and they remain exactly where you left them. They are not affected by the shutdown. However, everything that lived "inside" Jules – settings, environment variables, scheduled tasks, memories, and activity history – requires a manual export.

Google has provided an official export tool that allows you to download all this information to a local folder. The process is performed through the Jules CLI:

npm install -g @google/jules
jules login

The Surprising Twist: Google Recommends Competitors

Ironically and quite amusingly, in its official export guide, Google suggests that users utilize a different coding agent, such as Claude Code, to perform the migration smoothly. This is a step that highlights the maturity of the current ecosystem – even when a product is shut down, the tools in the market have become standard enough to serve as a bridge between platforms.

Where do we go from here?

Google is not throwing away the experience gained with Jules. All the insights, logic, and autonomous capabilities developed during the project are moving to Antigravity, Google's new agent-first platform. The goal is to consolidate all AI efforts under one roof, instead of spreading them across various experimental projects.

Summary and Conclusions

The shutdown of Jules is a reminder that in the field of AI, we are still in the stage of trial and error. Google has chosen to join forces into Antigravity, which indicates that the company is focusing on building a unified and stronger platform instead of maintaining multiple parallel tools.

My recommendation: Do not wait until the last minute. Perform the export right now, and ensure all your setup scripts and settings are backed up. If you are looking for an alternative, you should examine tools like Claude Code, which have already proven themselves as effective solutions for migrating data from previous agents.
