Codex: Your New Control Center with GPT-5.5

April 23, 2026250

Beyond Code: Codex Becomes Your New Control Center (and Also Got GPT-5.5)

If until now you treated AI tools as "just another chat window" or an upgraded autocomplete, the latest Codex update is about to change the way you think about work. We are no longer talking about a tool that helps write a line of code, but about a full workspace (Workspace) that behaves like an independent team member, one that can move the mouse, read documents, and run quality checks while you focus on the architecture.

The most significant change is the move to the GPT-5.5 model, which brings significantly improved multi-step planning abilities. It is not only faster; it can understand complex intent and carry out tasks that take hours autonomously, while checking itself and fixing mistakes in real time.

Not only inside the editor: full control of the operating system

The most impressive feature in the update is Computer Use. It is currently available to macOS users, and it lets Codex launch external apps, click, type, and perform actions inside your computer in a secure environment. This means you can ask the agent to run a series of QA tests on a local site, and it will simply open the browser, click the buttons, and report visual issues.

In addition, an internal browser called Atlas was launched. It lets you do "visual prompting": you can mark a broken element on the site, add a comment, and Codex will fix the CSS or JS directly in the source code based on what it sees in the browser.

Deep integration with Google Workspace and PDF files

Codex is no longer limited to code text files. The new version brings full support for Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. This means you can feed it data directly from spreadsheets, ask it to update presentations, or analyze long and complex PDF documents.

For those who do technical or academic writing, support for LaTeX was added, which makes working with mathematical formulas and scientific documents much simpler and faster.

Tools for professionals

The update includes several features that save valuable time in the day-to-day of developers and product managers:

  • •Auto-review: An automatic code review system that scans Pull Requests and suggests fixes according to security standards (such as OWASP) and performance.
  • •System-level voice dictation: Instead of typing long instructions, you can simply speak. The system understands technical context and converts speech into precise commands.
  • •90+ plugins (MCP): Direct connection to tools like Jira, GitLab, CircleCI, and the Microsoft Suite, which lets Codex draw context from open tasks or version history.

Summary: from Assistant to Technical Lead

We are seeing a leap here from passive tools to active agents. Codex's ability to manage long-term memory across different conversations, together with its control of the browser and the operating system, turns it from a development platform into a real Command Center.

If you want to try the new capabilities, it is recommended to download the updated Desktop app and start connecting your Workspace tools. The combination of the GPT-5.5 model and the new automation capabilities points the way to project management where the AI is not only a writer but also an executor.
