Claude AI Computer Use: The New Feature That Takes Control

Claude Takes Over the Keyboard: Meet the New Ability That Will Change Your Day

If until now you used artificial intelligence mainly to write texts or analyze code, it is time to update the way you think about work. Anthropic took Claude's capabilities one step further with the Computer Use feature, which lets the model not only "think" for you, but actually "work" on your computer in your place [1, 9].

What exactly is Computer Use?

Unlike regular bots that are limited to a chat box, the new ability lets Claude operate the computer exactly as a human does [1, 10]. The model can:

  • •Watch the screen: It "sees" your graphical interface [6, 10].
  • •Move the cursor: It knows how to navigate between windows and menus [1, 10].
  • •Type and click: It performs actions like filling out forms, opening apps, or browsing sites [2, 3, 10].

This means you can define a complex task, for example, "Open the sales report in Excel, copy the data into the CRM, and email a summary," and let Claude carry out this entire chain of actions in the background, while you free up time for more important tasks [2, 8].

Where does it meet you?

This ability is currently built into Claude Code and Claude Cowork [8, 14]. While Claude Code is meant for developers who want to automate development processes directly from the terminal [12, 15], Cowork brings these capabilities to business users who don't write code as well, letting them manage routine office tasks autonomously [14].

Important notes for users

As of now, the feature is in beta and is available mainly to Pro and Max subscribers through the desktop app (currently on macOS) [8, 20]. It is important to remember that this is a powerful tool that requires access permissions to the computer, so it is recommended to use it on tasks you supervise at the beginning.

This technology marks a shift from an AI that only "advises" to an AI that "acts" (Agentic AI). Instead of spending hours copying and pasting between programs, you become a manager of a digital agent that does the grunt work [11, 18].

Summary and conclusions

Claude's ability to use a computer is not just a technological gimmick, but a leap in work productivity. As the models become more accurate, our need to perform repetitive technical actions will keep declining. If you work in a macOS environment, now is the time to start experimenting with this feature and see which routine tasks you can move to automation today.
