The 32MB limit is gone: A dramatic update for developers working with the Claude API
If you are building AI-based applications, you have likely encountered the frustrating moment where the Claude API returns a "Request too large" error, even though you knew for a fact that you still had plenty of room left in your context window. This week, Anthropic released a significant update that solves this exact problem and provides much more breathing room for complex tasks.
What has changed?
Anthropic has increased the maximum request size limit in the Messages API and the Token Counting API from 32 megabytes to 128 megabytes.
It is important to understand: This is not a change to the size of the context window itself. Claude's models still operate under the existing token limits (such as 1 million tokens for the advanced models). The change focuses on the raw byte volume that the API is willing to accept in a single request.
Why is this critical for developers?
In the past, the 32MB limit created a technical bottleneck, especially for heavy multi-modal tasks. The reason for this lies in how files are sent to the API: when we attach images or PDF documents, they undergo Base64 encoding, a process that increases file size by roughly one-third. Thus, a 24MB PDF file would "choke" the request before we even had the chance to add complex prompts or conversation history.
The 4x increase in request volume now allows for:
- •Longer Computer Use agents: Tasks where the model needs to analyze a long series of screenshots to make complex decisions will no longer be cut off midway due to image overload.
- •Handling heavy documents: Uploading multi-page PDFs or data-heavy documents becomes more reliable and simpler in a single request.
- •Continuous workflow: Instead of artificially splitting requests and managing unnecessary complexity in your code, you can send more raw data at once.
Points to pay attention to
Despite the good news, there are some caveats you should be aware of to avoid encountering unexpected errors:
- •Third-party cloud platforms: The new 128MB limit is relevant to Anthropic's direct API. If you consume Claude via Amazon Bedrock or Google Cloud (Vertex AI), their limits are often significantly lower (e.g., 20MB-30MB) and may not update at the same speed.
- •Image resolution: In addition to increasing the request volume, Anthropic has also updated the resolution limit for images in requests containing more than 20 images, from 2,000 pixels to 3,000 pixels, which allows for higher detail retention in graphs, reports, or compressed screenshots.
Summary and conclusions
Anthropic's decision to remove the 32MB barrier is evidence that the company is listening to the needs of agent developers. The fact that you can now send up to 128MB of data in a single request opens the door to more complex applications without having to fight the transport technology itself.
If you are working on automations or vision-based agents (Computer Use), this is the time to re-examine your architecture—you may be able to simplify quite a few file upload processes that previously required working with the Files API or intermediary solutions.
