Anthropic Claude Message Threads: Improving AI Agent Performance

A Breakthrough in AI Agent Performance: Meet Claude's Message Threads

If you are building long-running AI agents, you are likely familiar with the common bottleneck: the need to repeatedly send the entire conversation history in every API request so the model remembers the context. This not only burdens bandwidth but also significantly impacts latency. Anthropic recently launched a significant solution to this problem: Message Threads, which is now entering public beta [1, 3].

How does it work in practice?

Instead of sending the entire context with every new request, the Claude API now allows you to create a "thread." At the beginning of the process, you send the full conversation and receive a unique identifier. In each subsequent request, you send only the new messages and the identifier of the previous response [4, 9].

The Anthropic server stores the context on its end temporarily, allowing the model to begin processing the response much faster. The results speak for themselves: for heavy requests (500,000 to 1 million tokens), there was a decrease of approximately 35% in Time to First Token (TTFT) [1, 9].

Who is this for?

This feature was designed specifically for scenarios where speed is critical and there is a rapid sequence of actions [1, 6]:

  • •Coding Agents: Where every file edit or tool result adds more and more information to the conversation.
  • •**Agents
