The Hidden AI Inflation: Why Your $20 Is Worth Less (And What to Do About It)

The "unlimited included" party is over. Tech giants are moving into the milking phase, and they are doing it with a brilliant marketing patent: shrinking quotas instead of raising prices.

It was nice for us this past year, right? We got insane models for almost free or for the price of two pizzas. But if you’ve noticed that lately you are hitting the "quota wall" of Claude or ChatGPT much faster than before – you aren't imagining it.

Tech giants have stopped trying to feed us spoonfuls of honey to get us to join their services and have moved on to their favorite stage: the milking stage. It started with Anthropic in Claude’s professional plans, continued with OpenAI’s expensive models (like the new o1), and Google is closing the loop with an aggressive push for Workspace AI plans.

The mechanism is simple and brilliant: instead of raising the monthly price from $20 to $50 and catching angry headlines on tech blogs, they simply lower the quotas. It is hidden inflation at its best. Think of it like a milk manufacturer shrinking the carton from one liter to 750 ml and calling it "convenience packaging." You don't feel it directly in your wallet immediately, but you find yourself running out of milk for your coffee much faster.

The "Sweetening the Bitter Pill" Method

So we don't get too bitter, the companies use three tactics that make us feel like we are getting more, while in practice we are getting less:

  1. •Deliberate lack of transparency: What the hell is "5 times the base"? When OpenAI or Anthropic define quotas, they use vague concepts. How much is the base? How is it managed during peak hours? They are all ambiguous definitions that change according to their server loads. You never really know how many messages you have left.
  2. •The impossible context equation: New models, like Google’s Gemini 1.5 Pro, boast a context window of millions of tokens. It sounds amazing, but here is the catch: as the conversation gets longer, each new message "burns" much more of your quota because the model has to re-read the entire history. Suddenly, one PDF file that is too large finishes your daily quota within three questions.
  3. •The push to the higher Tier: The goal is clear – to bring you to a point of frustration where your $20 feels like crumbs. From there, the road to upgrading to Team or Enterprise plans (which cost significantly more, sometimes even in the $100 range per user in large organizations) is very short.

The Trap: Organizational Memory as a Hostage

The real problem is not just the money, but the Vendor Lock-in. As we use these chats more, we are storing our business and personal memory there. We upload documents, build dedicated GPTs, and manage in-depth conversations.

Once your data is trapped inside the platform, you become a captive audience. Google could decide tomorrow that access to your memory in Gemini requires a more expensive subscription, and you will have no choice but to pay.

How to work smart and not become a hostage?

The solution is not to stop using AI, but to change the way you work. Instead of spreading subscriptions all over the place and being subject to the whims of quotas, it is time to build an independent ecosystem:

  • •Disconnect data from the model: Do not rely on the internal Knowledge Base of OpenAI or Anthropic as your only data repository. Use external tools or No-Code solutions (like Make or Airtable) to manage your information.
  • •Working with API instead of chat: When using via API (using tools like TypingMind or no-code development environments), you pay exactly for what you consumed. There are no hidden quotas and no "flat price" where you subsidize other heavy users.
  • •External memory management (RAG): The future belongs to those who connect the model to their data in a modular way. When your memory sits in an independent place, you can replace the "brain" (the model) whenever you want – today it's Claude 3.5, tomorrow it's GPT-5, without losing a single piece of information.

Bottom Line

Don't let the designed interfaces and token calculators put you to sleep. Tech giants are banking on you getting used to the convenience and then paying an exorbitant price for what you once got in the basic plan.

Your data is your most valuable asset. Is it already sitting in an independent place that you control, or are you still waiting for the moment when you discover that your quota ran out just when you needed the most important answer?
